Topic: Sociology of Mental Health Mental illness and poor mental health are frequently perceived as biological defects. However, sociologists contend that mental illness is a social construct and that the mental health of populations is deeply influenced by social environments. This course examines mental health from a sociological perspective, emphasizing the role of social factors—rather than biological factors—in shaping how mental illness is defined, experienced, understood, and treated.
