Game Development in the Context of Educational and Psychological Research

Credit: 3 OR 4 hours.

A hands-on introduction to creating research studies using Unity game development software. Students will identify a foundational study in educational or psychological research and learn to use Unity software to recreate that protocol. Students are NOT expected to have any experience with programming or Unity. This course is ideal for students interested in pursuing an advanced degree in psychology, advanced cognitive and behavioral methods that leverage cutting-edge technology, or those looking for an introduction into game development.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite: PSYC 235 or equivalent; or Consent of Instructor.

Title: Game Development in The Context of Educational and Psychological Research Description: This seminar will provide a broad overview of unmoderated remote research procedures used with children and families and practical experience developing educational/psychological research studies using Unity game development software. After understanding the fundamentals of unmoderated remote research procedures, students will use Unity to develop 3 small-scale practice studies before creating their own study as a final project. All studies will be built using Unity's visual scripting, meaning students DO NOT need prior coding experience or experience with Unity to succeed in the course. In addition to the lecture on Mondays and Wednesdays, students will be expected to review and complete 1 hour and 20 minutes of asynchronous video lectures each week, which are designed to introduce core concepts prior to that week's lecture. Graduate Students should register for this section. RESTRICTED TO GRADUATE STUDENTS
