SP25 - ENGL 578 - Seminar in Literature and Other Disciplines - Computational Cultural Studies - Tess McNulty - This course provides a graduate level introduction to the computational study of culture. On the one hand, we will cover both the theory and (basic) practice of using computation to study cultural objects—from novels and poems to paintings and Instagram images—as currently developed through the growing fields of Cultural Analytics and the Digital Humanities. At the same time, we will consider what knowledge of the methods employed by these fields—and particularly, methods of machine learning or “AI”—contribute to our understanding of culture. At a moment when machine learning models are used both to distribute cultural objects to audiences (e.g., through the algorithms employed companies like Facebook or Netflix) and to generate these cultural objects (chat GPT’s increasing role in the production of writing and entertainment) understanding how these tools operate is more and more crucial to comprehending how literature, and, and culture work.
