SP25 ENGL 285 - Postcolonial Literature in English - Rebecca Oh - This class will introduce you to postcolonial literature, or literature produced by writers and culture-makers from Britain’s former empire. Despite its name, the “post” in postcolonial literature is vexed, and marks continued forms of relation rather than a clean break between colonialism and the postcolonial moment. This course will therefore introduce you to the way postcolonial writers, theorists, and filmmakers resist or "write back" to empire and its representations of colonized spaces and peoples. But it will also show how postcolonial writers engage with colonialism’s long shadow, as postcolonial nationhood, identity, economics and modernity continue to be shaped by Western discourses and practices. Texts may include fiction, film, poetry and theory.
