Topic: Pleasure and Fun, In Spite of It All (Spain, 1898-1960) A superficial consideration of Spanish literary and artistic representations of the first half of the twentieth century might create the impression that the period was one long, bleak slog, characterized by social injustice, cultural and political turbulence, and philosophical despair. From lamentations over the end of the empire to the brutal Civil War to Francoist repression: Where’s the fun in that? Where, to be more precise, is the pleasure? This class invites participants to take this question seriously; to examine how various sorts of pleasure are represented and policed, how writers and filmmakers of the period created pleasure for their readers and viewers, and, most importantly, how we might find pleasure in the study of Iberian literatures and cultures during this angst-ridden period.
