May be repeated to a maximum of 16 graduate hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528 A (for DMA or MM performance or composition students); graduate standing in Musicology; Music and Sound Studies graduate minor; or consent of instructor.

This course traces the diverse histories and perspectives that have created country music. More than a narrative of genre and styles, we will discuss the beginnings of country from multiple viewpoints including how the often-avoided topics of politics, race, sexuality, and transnational markets have all played formative roles in the genre’s global popularity and how it has encompassed identities outside of its assumed white origins in the American South. Students are encouraged to bring and share their own perspectives on country music, both positive and negative, as these will fuel our discussions on important social topics. As a way of broadening the understanding of country music and its musical forms, we’ll also include songwriting sessions (individuals or small groups) to create new songs that address many of our course topics including alternate views and expansion (or complication!) of the genre. This hands-on approach will help us learn about musical form and the complicated nature of writing songs (lyrics or melodies) that intersect with current events, politics, emotion, trauma, and perceptions of the past.
