Provides seminar discussions and a hands-on processing experience that applies current theories and practices utilized to solve the most common problems that are encountered by today's archivists and curators when arranging and describing historical records, archives, manuscripts, and artifacts. As the audiovisual production and preservation domains continue to move from the analog to the digital, it is increasingly important for information science students to understand how to work with digital time-based media. This four-week workshop will feature hands-on work with encoding, transcoding and metadata harvesting tools. This class will be highly useful for students who want to work directly with digital time-based media assets as part of their careers. This course meets 9/10/24 - 10/18/24.

This course focuses on time-based media materials in libraries and archives. Students will learn about the preservation and digitization of different media types – motion picture film, video, and recorded sound – as well as issues related to collection development, copyright/ownership, and the cataloging/description and arrangement of time-based multimedia objects.
