Reviews theory and research on the social and historical development of writing systems, including consideration of the relationship between oral and written language, writing and other graphic representation systems, alternative technologies, the evolution of writing systems, and the social functions of literacy.

Same as CI 563. Prerequisite: Admission to the graduate programs of a unit offering the graduate specialization in Writing Studies, or consent of instructor.

FA25 ENGL 505 - Writing Studies - Charlesia McKinney - This seminar offers an introduction to the interdisciplinary study of writing. We will survey historical and contemporary scholarship rooted in Writing Studies praxis across academic, domestic, professional, and digital spaces. Throughout the semester, you will practice strategies for reading new and familiar academic genres, conducting research, developing inquiries, crafting arguments, presenting evidence, and identifying claims of significance. Students will also gain familiarity with organizations, conferences, and journals associated with the field.
