Section Info: How does Jewish American Literature compare with/influence/be influenced by other U.S. Minority Literatures? Is it American Jewish Literature or Jewish American Literature? Are Jews white? In which U.S. minority literatures does Jewishness feature as a theme? What makes a literary work Jewish American other than the Jewishness of its author? Is that all it takes? How has Jewish American Literature changed over time? Are there trends/themes we can find? What can we say about the similarities and differences between the Jewish American experience and that of many other US minority literatures? What does the dialogue between them sound like? By looking at some examples of Jewish American Literature and comparing and analyzing the dialogue between Jewish American Literature and myriad U.S. Minority literatures this course aims to grapple with these and other questions. Many of the texts we read beyond the Jewish American examples specifically refer to Jewishness as a theme. We will explore the experiences, conditions, and perspectives of the U.S. Minority literatures we are able to peruse. We will encourage comparison across these different contexts while also preserving the distinctions inherent in each minority group. This course fulfills the Literature and the Arts General Education requirement, U.S. Minority Cultures General Education Requirement, the culture cluster for the minor/major in Jewish Studies, and REPCIS requirement for English. Same as CWL 209 and ENGL 222.
