FA25 ENGL 115 - Introduction to British Literature - Gillen Wood - Over the last millennium, Britain has evolved from a little-regarded cultural backwater of Europe to global superpower to its present incarnation as a modern, multicultural hub of commerce and culture. This extraordinary thousand-year history is captured in the diverse voices and global scope of British literature, its richest legacy. In 115, we will explore a selection of poetry, plays, fiction, and non-fiction – from the medieval epic poem Beowulf, to a comedy by Shakespeare, poems by Keats, and contemporary short stories by Zadie Smith. Emphasis throughout the course will be on the aesthetic originality and innovation of these works, their psychological depth, and how they reflect the tumultuous social history of a nation in a perpetual state of self-transformation.
