Description: The Science of Human Nature. This seminar will focus on the history of scientific ideas/debates about human difference—race, gender, sexuality, etc. We will read and discuss a variety of perspectives on this history, from the earliest theories of human biological difference to current debates in genomics and society. While the seminar will focus on secondary scholarship, we will also read selected primary sources. Students will have the option of either writing a historical “think piece” (essentially, a magazine-style essay that does not draw on original research) or a standard research paper drawing on primary sources (for students with research interests in this topic).
