Topic: Gender, Race, and Social Justice, U.S. Description: In the early 20th century, many Americans imagined a better society—and debated, organized, and fought for their ideas. This course introduces students to three major American social movements that fought for social justice and changed American society: women’s rights, labor, and African American civil rights. The course focuses on the first decade of the 20th century through lengthy role-playing games. The first takes place in Greenwich Village, NY in 1913 as radical bohemians debate suffrage and labor. The second game take places in a Harlem, 1919 barbershop where barbers and clients discuss the news and who should lead the Black community.
