Section Info: Description Modern theatre developed through an economic, political, social, and cultural revolution in the last half of the nineteenth century and thru the twentieth. New philosophical theories were raised, and global culture began to change. The population of the major cities in the world started to grow due to a new wave of new arrivals, and feudalism was gradually replaced with modern civic/urban life. Modern playwrights’ reaction to these changes was to clarify and give meaning to the effects of the new societies. This course will discuss those impacts on modern theatre from the late nineteenth to the twenty-first century. We will explore a diverse spectrum of styles such as Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism, Theatricalism, Expressionism, Futurism, Surrealism, Theatre of cruelty, and Epic theatre. This course is designed for theatre practitioners, and a general understanding of standard theatrical terms and concepts is required. However, all majors are welcome.
