Description: Our class will help develop a museum exhibit commemorating the inaugural Farm Aid concert, which was held at our very own Memorial Stadium in 1985. 80,000 people attended the musical extravaganza, with millions more watching live on television. The event raised millions of dollars to support family farmers enduring devastating economic conditions. The concert’s dozens of performers included stars like Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt, and John Mellencamp. Through readings, recordings, and films we will learn about the concert and its multiple historical contexts (e.g., economic, musical, political, regional). We will also engage with local archives, organizations, and community members. This work will include a “History Harvest” event, where the public will be invited to share personal stories and artifacts related to Farm Aid.
