Native American History

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

A survey of the Native American experience in North America from the time of first contact to the present. The course will examine the dynamics and consequences of Native dispossession as well as the continuities in American Indian life and culture. Course materials will include writing and testimony by Native people as well as historical narratives, court decisions and government documents.

Section Info: Description: This course examines the history of Native peoples through the lens of environmental change. What kinds of relationships did Native Americans have with their natural environments in the past? What kinds of environmental challenges do Native Americans face today? With a focus on the American West, we will learn how these relationships changed over time, after contact with Americans, dispossession and settler colonialism, overharvesting, natural resource development, contamination of landscapes, sacred site protection, and climate change.
