East Asian Civilizations

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Surveys the three major East Asian civilizations from ancient and classical times, through the period of Western influence, political revolution, and modernization, to the contemporary age and the emergence of East Asian superpowers.

Same as EALC 120. Credit is not given for both HIST 120 and EALC 135.

Section Info: Description: East Asia is a dynamic region in today’s world. And its cinemas have become huge forces in the global cultures. This is a cinematic journey through East Asian histories and cultures in the contexts of globalization and regionalization with emphasis on the sixteenth-century to the turn of twentieth-first century. This is a long period of enormous changes in East Asia. Because of its profound influence especially at the early formation of the region, and its contemporary rise to become the world’s second largest economy, the class will give special emphasis on China (or Greater China), and its interactions with Japan and Korea. Through films, the course will also explore the different ways in which China, Japan, and Korea struggled to modernize and define their ever-developing identities as well as their complex relations with the globalized world.
