This course will review the literature on educational games with a focus on design and efficacy research. Students will learn about common research methodologies for studying games, features of educational games that contribute to learning, theoretical implications of games research, and key historical developments in the field. A variety of educational goals (cognitive, metacognitive, affective) and game genres will be considered. Course activities will involve presentation of research papers and discussion, game-based learning activities, experimental design groups, and a course project designed by the student.
