Topic: Slavery and Society Description: This seminar explores the expansion of racial slavery in North America and the distinctive cultural, medical, social, and economic characteristics that shaped this institution over time and across distinct slave holding societies. We will focus on North American slavery, but we will also consider the experiences of displaced Africans in transit (during the middle passage) and within the Caribbean Basin. We will also critique scholarly investigations into the daily lives of slaves in a variety of different contexts and time periods. Finally, we will pay special attention to distinct but complementary patterns of resistance, community building, cultural production, and activism that allowed enslaved populations to re-negotiate their own bodies and social identity.
