Description: This course will examine the significance of empire, as an institution that has dominated human history as well as a structure that has cast a shadow over popular culture. We will analyze the various forms of empire historically and consider how fictional portrayals have influenced our understandings of empire. In doing so, we will focus on major empires from across the globe, throughout history, and in various fictional accounts. From early empires in the Middle East to the Galactic Empire in Star Wars, we will look at historical, literary, and cinematic depictions of empires. By alternating between different genres, we will see how powerful empire was historically as well as its influence on the world we live in today.
