Examines films as a significant medium of commentary on society and history. Explores the motives and careers of moviemakers, the ways in which films are influenced by their audiences, and how audiences' perception of historical processes are affected by films. Topics will vary.

Same as MACS 300. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topics vary. Students may register in more than one section per term. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours.

Topic: Post-Apocalypse and Dystopia Description: This course will explore the history of cultural anxieties about the future as expressed through narrative films about post-apocalypse and dystopia. An emphasis will be placed on how science and technology have inspired these visions of the future, and we will examine the cultural context in which these films were created and consumed. We will view classic and more recent films in this genre from a variety of cultural perspectives. Potential films will include: Metropolis (1927),The Last Man on Earth (1964), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), Planet of the Apes (1968), Night of the Living Dead (1968), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Soylent Green (1973), Stalker (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Threads (1984), 1984 (1984), The Handmaid’s Tale (1990), 12 Monkeys (1995), Ghost in the Shell (1995), Gattaca (1997), The Matrix (1999), WALL-E (2008), Snowpiercer (2013), and Interstellar (2014).
