Dancing Techniques Graduate Elective

Credit: 1 TO 2 hours.

An elective for graduate students and an umbrella course for dancing technique courses offered in the department. Courses are offered from a range of Africanist and Europeanist cultural origins, which may include techniques such as Ballet, Contemporary Modern, Improvisation, West African, Umfundalai, Hip-hop, House, Jazz, Capoeira, Tap. Specific dance forms for each semester will be listed in the class schedule. These provide graduate students with a physical study of various dance techniques and the cultural context of their creation and practice.

1 to 2 graduate hours. No professional credit. May be repeated. Prerequisite: Audition required during first two class sessions for non-dance graduates to remain enrolled in course.

516 Ballroom: This course is an introduction to partnering techniques through the lens of popular ballroom and Latin dances (waltz, tango, rumba, cha cha, etc.). This class will also provide cultural contexts of the dances from their European, Latin American, and Afro-Cuban origins to their current, cosmopolitan forms. May be repeated. 516 Contemporary - An introduction to the techniques of Iranian dance, providing a cultural context for the various dance practices found within the country, including classical, neo-classical, contemporary, Folkloric, and fusion styles. The course covers a range of Iranian dance vocabulary, including detailed hand and arm movements, fluid traveling steps and turns, and miniature postures.
