Introduction to artistic movements, contemporary and cultural trends that have shaped the multiple histories of dance. Each year there will be a particular focus on dance and its symbiotic relationship to: another art form such as music; socio-political ideologies such as gender, race, sexuality or national identities; or contemporary issues such as environment or technology. Goal of the course is to gain a broad understanding of dance as a distinctive generator of new knowledge and as a vital cultural agent and signifier.
Prerequisite: Major standing in Dance or consent of instructor.
