Section Title:
The Mendelssohns
Section Info:
TOPIC: "The Mendelssohns." This course will study one of the most prominent and interesting families in Biedermeier Germany: the Mendelssohns. A Jewish family that converted to Protestantism, they struggled with assimilation while simultaneously becoming a pillar of German musical life. This transformation was made possible in part through their nurturing of the arts in both their home and city, and in part by providing Germany with two immensely talented composers: Felix Mendelssohn and his sister, Fanny Hensel.  In examining the Mendelssohns, we have the opportunity to study, among other things, religious tolerance (and intolerance), the role of women in German musical culture, early public concert life, and, perhaps most significant, how an artist’s reputation is impacted by the politics of a given time (as the Mendelssohns’ were during the Third Reich). This course will explore all of these topics, as well as very recent scholarship that has adopted new methodological approaches.
