Intensive or comparative study of specific repertoires of instrumental music, or of particular genres or styles of instrumental composition and performance practice, and/or of particular instrumentalists. Includes broad reading in the social and intellectual climate of the musical practices at issue; pertinent analytical approaches or paradigms; and work with relevant source materials.

4 graduate hours. No professional credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528A (consult Class Schedule for specific section information), or graduate standing in musicology, or consent of instructor.

TOPIC: "Critical Source Studies in Keyboard Practice, 1400-1700." This course will explore keyboard practice and culture through primary sources dating between approximately 1400 and 1700. It will combine hands-on engagement with performance practices, with a focus on the cultural and material history of keyboard culture before the 18th century. Topics will include the keyboard in early colonial America, reading and playing from historical sources, instrument organology, keyboard practices and cultural identity, and the keyboard as a means of musical reproduction and transmission.
