TOPIC: "Music, Soundscape, and Landscape." This course will explore the connections between sound, musical performance, and designed landscapes in America from roughly 1750 to the present. After establishing a theoretical framework for the course, we will proceed in five units: 1) early American soundmarks (or sonic landmarks); 2) parks, gardens, and band shells designed for outdoor musical performance; 3) noise abatement campaigns in urban landscapes; 4) 20th century compositions that depict specific landscapes or construct imaginary soundscapes; and 5) site-specific performances that claim and reconfigure landscapes. This course will reconstruct the "auditory landscape" of the United States and consider ways that music, sound, and noise have shaped our understanding of and have been influenced by various American landscapes. In addition to weekly readings and discussions, this course will feature a collaborative group project and either a final individual presentation or a final performance.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students in the Music department.
