Description: This seminar is a sociological, historical, and contemporary examination of the diversity of student-led protests of the 1960s (such as protest by activists in the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, Students for a Democratic Society, Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Mexican American Youth Organization, Crusade for Justice, American Indian Movement, Asian American Political Alliance, Gay Liberation Front, Redstockings, Rolling Quads) and explores the differences and similarities between student protests of the 1960s/70s and protests in later decades to the present (such as #Occupy, #MeToo, #Black Lives Matter, #SayHerName, #Climate Change) and their impact on/in higher education. We will consider how students on and off college campuses have mobilized over free speech, civil rights, racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, militarism, poverty, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, immigrant rights, ethnic studies, women’s studies, multiculturalism, diversity in education, voting rights, military draft, ROTC, police violence, athlete pay, sports mascots, microaggressions, campus climates, tuition fees/costs, campus buildings and landmarks viewed as symbols of racism, undocumented and international students policies, among other issues. The importance of the relationship between education, technology, and social-economic development is increasing in the US and around the world. What are new information and communications technologies (ICTs), how are they being deployed, and for what reasons? Are new ICTs a means for delivering skill-based or distance education information, and in what ways are they becoming a part of societies today? What constitutes, then, ICTs for Development (ICT4D), and what role do they play in societies that are ‘industrialized’ and ‘developing’. This course will review basic definitions, explore current and new efforts to utilize ICTs in educational contexts, and compare how context and culture affect learning and teaching outcomes that utilize technology. A particular focus in this course will be on how ICTs are deployed in high-poverty contexts where diversity can make ICT4D particularly challenging.
