SP22 - ENGL 285 This course will mainly focus on narratives of the 19th and early 20th centuries from the British Empire. Looking at some popular speculative and adventure novels at the time, we will discuss themes including colonial control, imaginary otherness, criminality and detection, etc. How did culture, gender, race, and even personhood change in this vast new framework? How were the conventions of British literature affected by imperial domination? And was the practice of imperialism itself shaped by the works that described and sometimes critiqued it?
