Section Info:
SP22 ENGL 220 Section P - Literature has long helped us explore questions that science raises for us: What awe-inspiring futures does science open to us? What role does science play in our dreams (and nightmares) of the future? Where can (or should) we draw a line between the human and the technological? What responsibilities do people have toward the environment and non-human species? In this course, we’ll look at some fascinating stories to investigate some of those questions. This course is designed for students from a variety of majors, and no formal training in sciences is needed. We’ll read novels and short stories by Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, Samuel R. Delany, Octavia Butler, Kim Stanley Robinson, and G. Willow Wilson. Through these works, we’ll engage questions in life sciences, Darwinian evolution, gene manipulation, space exploration, climate science, and digital information technology. Course work will include short online responses, 2 short papers (3-6 pp. each), and a final project. This course satisfies the General Education criteria for Humanities – Lit & Arts.
