An advanced practicum in audio recording including studio microphone techniques, classical/concert microphone techniques, recording session management, audio editing, and advanced mixing, production, and mastering techniques. The course will be presented as a practicum with students recording a variety of instruments and ensembles in the studio, in concert venues, and completing mixing projects of recording sessions. THE ART OF BEATMAKING I. This course gives students who’ve never completed a composition on a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) an opportunity to explore urban and popular music beatmaking (traditionally referred to as instrumental music composition) from a lens of analysis, creative, and technical understanding, and to apply that creative and technical understanding in producing original music. Students work directly with a music industry professional to produce original music of their own. This course is for beginning DAW users.

Topics and genres covered include both instrumental and vocal repertoire: instrumental sonatas and concertos, art song, opera, music theater; 21st century music, popular music, early music/continuo; jazz, vocal coaching. Different approaches to wind, string, brass, vocal, opera, orchestra, choral repertoire and rehearsals will be discussed.
