This course will approach a global history of the “baroque tradition,” seeking to decenter our understanding of its associated music-making in the 17th and 18th centuries. By adopting a polycentric perspective, students will study the history of what is most commonly referred to as “Western (art) music” and its relationship to European colonialism and Christian missionizing in this period. These global networks of power will be explored through a series of case studies ranging from the early modern imperial courts and trading ports of South, Southeast, and Northeast Asia, to the reducciones of South America and beyond. Students will think not only about a more diverse range of historical actors and associated materials, but will also question the “Europeanness” of the “baroque” both past and present, taking seriously indigenous contributions to and ownership of its musical articulations.
