Craftivism
Section Info:
Topic: Craftivism: Re-making Social Fabrics. Craft activism, DIY, yarn-bombing, pussy hats, protest banners, Bernie dolls, flags. This course explores the many possibilities of textiles to make and re-make social bonds, raise awareness about social and political issues, and advocate for change. Students will learn 2D and 3D textile techniques including: stitching, crochet, loom-building, weaving, appliqué, and rope-making. Emphasis will be placed on material and structural experimentation, DIY, reuse, and relational aesthetics. Through making their own banners, flags, soft-sculptures, and imagined and realized social engagements, students will complete weekly making assignments and 2-3 major projects that will be discussed in focused critique settings. Students will be asked to give presentations on selected artists and readings. Artist practices considered in this course may include: Aram Han Sifuentes, LJ Roberts, Tanya Aguiñiga, Lygia Clark, Dread Scott, Indira Allegra, Liz Collins, Marie Watt, Sonya Clark, Consuelo Jimenez-Underwood. Readings may include poems, reflections, and theoretical texts by Glenn Adamson, Claire Bishop, Qwo-Li Driskill, Victoria Mitchell, Sara Ahmed, Pablo Helguera, bell hooks, Amelia Montes, Tim Ingold, Jessica Hemmings, and Robin Wall Kimmerer.
