Topic: How matter maters: Theories of materiality in practice. Archaeologists, art historians, and other investigators of material culture attempt to understand past and contemporary societies through their object remnants (or artifacts). Materiality, as a theoretical framework, has a meaning that goes beyond the physical properties of an object; it considers the thingness of things and their impact or agency with regard to people’s lives and thoughts. Just as humans construct their social world by making and using things, constructing buildings, and dwelling in them, so do objects and spaces construct human subjects, personhood, and identity. We make things and things make us. In this seminar we will explore contemporary theories in the field of material culture studies alongside a selection of archaeological and art historical case studies, drawn from ancient, medieval, and modern contexts. We will examine how the multidimensional and, especially, sensorial material properties of objects shape(d) social realities, human subjectivities, cognitive processes, technological revolutions, and cultural identities.
