Section Info:
This course offers a survey of the major developments in European art of the nineteenth century. We shall pay particular attention to developments in French painting, but other media and other countries, especially England, Germany, Spain, and Italy, also receive significant attention. Topics include artistic responses to the French Revolution, juste-milieu painting, the rise of the avant-garde, significant movements such as Realism, Impressionism, Neoimpressionism, and Symbolism, and the demise of classicism.
