The investigative methodology students learn is seen as the best way to provide the producer/editor/reporter with insight into social issues, government and businesses practices and systems. The methodology can be used to examine and topics or issue. Students will use data, documents, interviews and field observation to collect information, do basic data analysis, test hypotheses, and produce stories in text, audio, or video or all. Students will learn how to do deep research, organize complex material, and produce presentations that are easy for the public to understand.

Investigative Reporting in the Digital Age: This course will integrate traditional and innovative methods of investigative reporting, including data analysis and text mining of documents and social media. Students will delve deeply into one topic throughout the semester and have the opportunity to create and publish a multi-media project. Eligible for Journalism minor and PR minor. Please note: This section will have synchronous (live) sessions. Any Journalism student wishing to take JOUR 483 in SP21 as a required journalism lab (rather than as a Media elective course), you will need to complete a 1 hour JOUR 460 independent study with Brant Houston. Please contact your advisor for the paperwork to register for this independent study.
