Section Title:
New Media, Society & You
Section Info:
This course introduces students to research and theory surrounding new media and technology. New media are considered interactive media, which are facilitated by the internet, such as social media and video games. We will examine the impacts of new media on society and, ultimately, our everyday lives. We will look beyond “good/bad” classifications of new media in favor of seeking a more balanced understanding of the significance of these evolving technologies. A goal of the course is to reflect on the role interactive media technologies play in our increasingly digital society/lives and how we can leverage them for positive purposes while minimizing the potential for negative consequences. Please note: This section will be taught asynchronous (no live sessions). Course will be managed through Compass.

Section Title:
Social Mdia Big Tech & Society
Section Info:
SOCIAL MEDIA, BIG TECH & SOCIETY This course offers students a comprehensive understanding of the role that big tech companies and their platforms and products play in daily life. Among topics covered include hashtag activism, digital surveillance, algorithmic inequality and search bias, data privacy, monopoly and anti-trust, changes to the news industry, and the “internet yuck” of hate speech and harassment. Students will be required to take a 24-hour technology fast. While there are requirements to attend online office hours at least twice, the course is asynchronous. This is *not* a “skills” course for learning how to promote content on social platforms. Note: Credit is not given for JOUR 199 Social Media if credit for JOUR 460 Social Media Theory & Practice has been earned (SP CRN: 69111; FA CRN: 70564). Please note: This section will be taught asynchronous (no live sessions).
