Chow, K	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 08/23/21-12/08/21 Section Title: Ming-Qing China Global Context Section Info: Description: This course introduces students to recent scholarly works on the approaches, methodologies, and major issues in the study of Chinese thought and culture in the Ming (1368) and Qing (1644-1911) periods. Works are selected from a wide range of disciplines and fields of study: religion, intellectual history, cultural history, and women’s history, etc. These works cover the major intellectual movements: the institutionalization of neo-Confucian orthodoxy, the impact of commercial publishing on thought and culture, translation of Christianity, the rise of Confucian ritualism, and the politics of identity formation. These intellectual movements will be investigated in the larger context of changing cultural practices. The spread of consumption culture, the expansion of commercial publishing and cultural production, as well as the formation of national identities and gendered cultural practices will be examined. Participation in discussion is required and students are responsible for making presentations. There will be five written response assignments and a final seminar paper.
