Section Info:
Description: During the twentieth century, Japan experienced a tremendous transformation. The country went from being a mostly agrarian society led by former warriors of the old Tokugawa regime to a postindustrial democracy whose economy, technology, and popular culture are of global importance today. Along the way, Japan rapidly industrialized, gained and lost an empire, suffered defeat in a devastating war in China and the Pacific, endured an occupation by US-led forces, emerged like a proverbial phoenix to build bullet-trains and host the 1964 Olympics, and later created what some have called a postmodern society whose anime, manga, film, games, and other cultural commodities are consumed both at home and abroad. During the semester, you will learn about all these topics and more. This is a discussion-based course with a series of research and writing exercises that culminate in an end-of-the-semester project of your own choosing.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
