Section Title:
Babylon: Myth and Reality
Section Info:
This course satisfies the seminar requirement for art history majors and minors. Topic: Babylon: Myth and Reality. Ever since the archaeological rediscovery of the Ancient Near East in the 19th century, generations of scholars (and artists) have attempted to reconstruct the “real Babylon.” Fascination with the city likely stems from the fact that so much of its history is steeped in myth, from the biblical account of the Tower of Babel to the city’s fabled hanging gardens. The first part of this course explores the archaeological reality behind the myths of ancient Babylon and looks at the city’s artistic and architectural achievements within the larger context of Mesopotamian history. The second part looks at how this iconic city has figured in the cultural imagination of later periods, from biblical and Classical authors, to European and Iraqi artists, Hollywood filmmakers, science fiction writers, and modern political movements.
