Section Title:
Art of the Ancient Near East
Section Info:
Topic: Art of the Ancient Near East. This survey course explores three thousand years of the art, architecture, and archaeology of the ancient Near East. After a brief introduction to the environment and prehistoric foundations of the region, the course will focus on the urban cultures of ancient Iraq, Iran, Syria, and south-eastern Turkey, from the “rise of civilization” around 3500 BCE through the end of the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires some 3,000 years later. We will study the major visual and architectural monuments from a broad cultural perspective and consider how and what they can tell us about life in these ancient cities.
