Public debate is caught in a swirl confusion, hostility and concern about immigrants. "Immigrant America" will put this debate into historic context and will examine migration into the United States over time from a variety of perspectives: political, cultural and historical. The first part of the class will focus on European immigration in the 19th century. Immigration restriction and immigration policy will be the focus mid-semester. The last third of the semester will be spent on learning about contemporary immigration, documented or no and the response by policymakers to the recent increase in refugee migration. Class discussion will focus on historic and contemporary texts and sources as well as on the student projects.
