Section Info:
Topic: Global History of World War II Description: This course examines what World War II was from various and wide perspectives, both thematic and geographic. We will start with diplomatic negotiations and military campaigns, discussing why the war broke out and how the Allies defeated the Axis powers. This course also focuses on culture, exploring how racial animosity and sexual concerns affected the conduct of war and postwar occupation. Although environment is often overlooked, we will consider how the war changed environmental landscape. Further, this course looks at legacies of the war with focus on colonialism, investigating how the conflict impacted colonies of the Euro-American and Japanese empires and how the war created new colonialism founded on a worldwide web of U.S. military bases. In addition, we will study the atomic bomb and discuss what the war meant for survivors of “Hiroshima.” Lastly, this course will spotlight memory and ask why our collective memory of the war still clashes in 2020. I will use many visual and audio materials besides a textbook and articles in this course.
