Section Info:
English 311 is a crash course in the messy, fascinating history of English, from its Indo-European origins to modern meme-speak. We’ll use tools from historical linguistics and engage directly with primary sources to consider how English has evolved across times and places. We’ll also consider how language functions in society, and how categories such as race, class, gender, and nationality affect dialect and usage in the United States, the British Isles, and other English-speaking populations. Finally, we’ll look at the hot-button issue of “standard” English(es), from the Old English period to the present, and the ideological investments of such a concept. Along the way, you may find answers to burning questions you’ve had about some of the more perplexing features of English.
