Section Info:
ENGL 218: This course aims to introduce you to Shakespeare's plays, from Richard III to Hamlet. We will explore Shakespeare's growing versatility in range of dramatic genres—history, comedy, and tragedy—and investigate the development of his poetic skill, focusing on language alongside plot and character. We will think about his plays both as historical artifacts produced within a specific context and as living texts that continue to be performed today. We will therefore intertwine multiple methods in our analysis of these texts, engaging in close readings of his dramatic poetry and prose, analyzing a little historical background, and watching and performing key scenes. Throughout, we will focus on the way Shakespeare's plays foreground the themes of acting and performance in order to explore issues of identity, disguise, social roles, and socio-political order.***If you have taken my English 418, you cannot take this course.
