Regional Economics
Section Info:
*****************RESTRICTED TO MSPE STUDENTS*****************Regional Economics focuses on the way in which subnational economies within a country (such as states) operate and function. Attention will be focused on how the regional economy works, its dependence on local and imported goods and services, the role of regional business cycles and the ways in which regions compete. Regional analysis aims to uncover the dynamics of location decision-making of both firms and individuals and the impacts these decisions have on the structure and structural changes of regional economies. Special attention will be directed to issues surrounding the role of households as providers of labor and consumers and the way their location decisions affect the growth and development of regional economies. The final parts of the course will address regional policies and equity-efficiency trade-offs, drawing on analysis in the US, EU and selected developing economies.

Topics in Public Econ
Section Info:
This course studies theory and measurement of efficiency costs of taxation, tax incidence, optimal commodity taxation, optimal income taxation, the theory of tax design, in-kind transfers, taxation of externalities, taxation and labor supply, tax evasion, and optimal provision of public goods in a second-best setting. Then we turn to dynamic settings and study the effects of taxation on savings and capital accumulation as well as revisiting incidence and optimal tax issues. In this context, the competing frameworks of dynastic families and overlapping-generations will both be studied.

Section Title:
Applied Macroeconometrics
Section Info:
The objective of the course is (i) to provide students rigorous foundations in Bayesian econometrics and (ii) study econometric models and methods that are useful to conduct substantive empirical research in macroeconomics. To that end we will focus on the estimation and structural identification of Bayesian ARIMA model, vector autoregressions (VAR), high dimensional dynamic factor models (DFM), dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models, time series models with regime switches (MS-VAR) and time-varying coefficients (TVP-VAR). An overarching theme in the applications we discuss in class will be the identification and quantification of the sources of business cycle fluctuations. Among those we will elaborate on the current and historical role of monetary policy, fiscal policy, technology, financial and uncertainty shocks in shaping macroeconomic dynamics.
