In this course, themes of leadership and community engagement will be explored in the context of promoting Sociology in the Illinois community. Students will learn what makes an effective leader, the role of emotional intelligence for leaders and develop leadership skills that take in to consideration the roles of self, others, and community. Students who participate in this course will develop skills including communication, leading groups, teamwork. In this course students will have the opportunity to directly apply the skills they are learning in the classroom while serving as ambassadors for the Sociology Department. In preparing for their role as ambassadors, students will undertake a number of activities including reading about and reflecting on contemporary models of leadership, participating in workshops through the Illinois Leadership Center and creating an e-portfolio based on their experiences and class assignments. As ambassadors, students will participate in activities including meeting with prospective students, serving as representatives of the Department of Sociology at campus events, visiting classes to promote the Sociology major and Sociology events, and promoting the major and Sociology events through Social Media. This course will meet online at the scheduled time.
