Markley, R	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 08/24/20-12/09/20 Section Info: Austen and the Novel - This seminar will focus on Jane Austen’s novels, and explore problems of gender, money, and social class at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century. To help contextualize her work, we will also read novels by her most noted contemporary contemporaries, Frances Burney. We will read most of Austen's major novels as well as Burney’s Cecilia and consider historical and critical material on the socioeconomic, political, and cultural contexts of the period. We will pay particular attention to the changing roles of women authors between 1770 and 1830, and examine at length Burney’s and Austen’s depictions of the problems confronting their heroines in a patriarchal society.
