Black Square to Black Reason
Section Info:
Topic: From Black Square to Black Reason: Imagining Post-Colonial Strategies of Architectural Subversion From Black Square to Black Reason explores the role of media in the generation of alternative and subversive architectural imaginaries. Reflecting on recent world events this seminar/workshop the course oscillates between the ‘Becoming Black of Objects’ and the ‘Becoming Black of the World.’ The ‘Becoming Black of Objects’ aims to reconstruct the world anew by pursuing a philosophy of nothingness, through non-objectivity, laziness, non-commodification, and rejection of the status quo. On the other hand, the ‘Becoming Black of the World” operates at the effects of the “globalization of markets, the postimperial military complex, and electronic digital technologies” that the colonized south has long been subject to and has now become the norm around the world. The “Becoming Black of the World” implies that “all events and situations in the world of life can be as¬signed a market value” and thus have turned “the systematic risks experienced specifically by Black slaves during early capitalism,” when “men and women from Africa were transformed into human-objects, human-commodities, human-money,” into the “norm for, or at least the lot of, all subaltern humanity.”The course finds common ground in the utopian and critical territories between Kazimir Malevich polemic Black Square (1915), and Achille Mbembe Critique of Black Reason (2013) as it collectively reconstructs the history of modernism and the avant-garde as it searches for ways to question the status quo and propose alternative ways to create new worlds. Other worlds are possible.
