This course will review widely used models for choice decisions in detection, discrimination, and identification tasks. We will spend about half of the semester on signal-detection theory (SDT), a very simple probabilistic model of yes/no decision making that can be applied to a huge variety of tasks and easily extended to other common paradigms, including forced-choice responding. The remainder of the semester will be devoted to models related to SDT, including threshold models and individual choice theory, and also to accumulator models that describe both response times and accuracy (including the drift-diffusion model). This course will be useful for anyone who uses tasks (human or animal) that involve simple choice decision-making.

Language is sketchy in its conveyance of thought, relying on listeners to fill in much of the intended meaning through inference. For example, if I say “Hand me the book”, a listener can often infer even in a room full of books which one I mean. Such inferences can be based on the physical setting (e.g., what objects are present, what objects are within your reach and not mine), knowledge about the situation and the speaker (what objects are relevant to the speaker’s goals), and on the preceding discourse (has the speaker already mentioned or implied a particular book). Our tendency to enrich sentences with these and other inferences has been documented in classic studies of memory for sentences within psychology, discourse comprehension in psycholinguistics, and in the field of linguistic pragmatics. Young children make some of these inferences, but struggle to draw other inferences in time to guide language processing. In this course we will read and discuss this literature, exploring what kinds of inferences listeners can make, and theoretical accounts of these inferences within psychology and linguistics. The seminar will include a focus on the development of pragmatic inference-making, asking to what extent the sketchiness of linguistic expression poses challenges for early language learning, versus under what circumstances young learners can make the inferences to figure out what we mean.

Current Topics in Affective Neurosciences Emotion is a double-edged sword. Iin some circumstances the enhanced significance of emotional stimuli can benefit cognitive processes (e.g. better memory for emotional events), while in others it can hinder them and cause detrimental effects on behavior (e.g., increased emotional distractibility). On the other hand, emotion processing is also susceptible to cognitive influences (e.g., cognitive control of emotion). Despite their relevance for understanding brain function in both healthy and clinical conditions, the neural mechanisms mediating the interactions between emotion and cognition are not well understood. This seminar will discuss current topics in the literature on emotion-cognition interactions, with a focus on the associated neural correlates. ( Will meet in Room 4369)

Topic: Neuropsychological Assessment of Children, Adolescents, and Adults This course will provide students with in-depth experience in comprehensive neuropsychological assessment for children, adolescents and adults. Students will have the opportunity to learn and master a wide variety of tests and measures used to assess cognitive, emotion, and social function. Readings, case conferences, and discussions will focus on analysis and interpretation of testing data and other sources of information. Cases generally involve individuals with complex neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric issues which intersect with social, emotional, and environmental challenges. Students attending this seminar will be exposed to hypothesis building and testing, measurement strategies and interpretation of data, and use of the literature to investigate and determine fundamental neuropsychological mechanisms and their interactions with other factors in explaining functional impairments.
