Section Title:
Environmental Governance
Section Info:
This graduate reading course will focus on an aspect of environmental governance that has received comparatively little attention: the role of external actors, especially donors and NGOs, in shaping local institutional arrangements for conserving and managing natural resources. We will trace external interventions through to the ecological and socio-economic outcomes they generate in interaction with local institutions and contexts. A key course objective will be to identify key factors associated with external interventions capable of yielding environmentally sustainable results over the long-term. The course will emphasize recent scholarship, but may also engage with some classic articles on this topic. Readings will focus on cases relating to forest conservation and management, particularly in tropical countries.
