Field Experience

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 1 OR 2 hours.

Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

This course will primarily focus on bird banding and identification. Students will be exposed to and learn skills necessary for banding birds: choosing net locations, erecting/taking down mist nets, extracting birds from mist nets, handling and processing captured birds (identification, banding, ageing, sexing, morphological measurements, etc.), banding ethics, and data recording. This class will meet at Phillips Tract in northeastern Urbana (<1 mile north of I-74 off of N Cottonwood Rd). The course will take place on the island of Eleuthera, in The Bahamas. Students will build skills to assess reefs and connecting habitats in conjunction with studies of how humans are impacting fish behavior and/or distribution. Course fees are expected to be approximately $3500 per student.

Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Fisheries Field Techniques Section Info: The objective of this course is to provide students with hands-on experience and training in standard methods and techniques used by fisheries scientists. This will be accomplished through a combination of field- and laboratory-based learning modules where students will learn collection techniques, data analysis methods and report writing. By the conclusion of the course, students will have an improved understanding of project design, data collection/management and field applications. Students will be required to take one (1) off-site Saturday field trip during to a fisheries field station during this course, date to be determined (most likely the third or fourth Saturday in September). This course introduces students to a social-ecological systems framework and enables them to develop practical skills needed for conducting research that is guided by this framework. Using Crystal Lake Park as a case example, students will learn social science field techniques including on-site surveys and GPS tracking, in addition to techniques from ecology such as a water quality assessment. Hands-on research skills will be developed in both indoor and outdoor settings to stimulate thinking about how methods can be used to integrate the social and natural sciences. Students will also develop a hypothetical research project that draws from a social-ecological systems framework, applies techniques learned in the class, and addresses a resource management problem in the context of an aquatic ecosystem such as Crystal Lake Park. Students will visit four local municipalities to study and evaluate various conceptual models and practices in sustainability public policy formulation. This course will meet in person in N-527 Turner Hall for the first and last class meeting (8/27 and 12/10) and at a location to be determined for the four field trips. Learning and application of techniques will occur in the context of performing a full census of Trelease Woods, a campus property managed by the University of Illinois Natural Areas Committee. Trelease is a 24.5 ha (60 acres) forest stand located 5 miles east of campus, making it a highly accessible outdoor classroom that is ideal for field‐based teaching. There are no course prerequisites. 4 hours/week, the specific day and time will depend on the group to which you are assigned.

Credit: 2 hours Section Title: Techniques in Soil Ecology Section Info: The soil beneath your feet is home to a marvelous diversity of organisms that live and interact within an astonishing variety of ecological niches. In the process, they wind up doing some cool and some veryimportant things for the environment. In this NRES 285 Field Experience, you will learn about the techniques that ecologists use to explore some of this hidden world. You'll learn about the age-old arts of isolation and cultivation, as you search for the fastest, meanest, slimiest, weirdest, and most versatile microbes in Champaign County. At the end of the semester, I hope that you have a better appreciation for the diversity of soil life and for the natural history of the Urbana-Champaign area. Pre-departure and Tanzanian class meetings will address the interface of ecology and wildlife management, with an emphasis on ecological and social science principles to explain current strategies and techniques for managing natural and cultural resources.
